As the input level exceeds threshold, most compressors keep applying more and more gain reduction as dictated by the ratio control setting.

This, in effect, is a second knee control and sets the amount of maximum gain reduction no matter how high the input level exceeds threshold. X-Comp also has a control called Max GR (20 to 60dB range). Softening the knee with the Knee control (0 to 40dB range) smoothes the transition into compression (and therefore the sound) by allowing gain reduction to start well before the actual threshold setting. X-Comp defaults to a hard knee compressor and starts gain reduction immediately after the expiry of the attack time setting and when threshold is reached. This is accomplished with precision and resolution using two methods: dual-symmetrical compressor knees and frequency-dependent parallel compression. X-Comp is capable of many compressor modes and styles-from gentle and unobtrusive control to stricter, more confined dynamics and up to very obvious special effects that radically change tonality. Duende plugs are available in VST, Audio Units and RTAS (with Wrapper) formats on PCs and Macs, and operate at 44.1/48/88.2/96kHz rates. Mini ships with 16 active slots and can be upgraded to 32 slots. Each of the four internal chips is divided into eight 'slots,' with X-Comp requiring one slot at 44.1/48 kHz in mono or two slots for stereo. Duende plug-ins run on internal DSP chips that are based on SSL's C Series digital consoles. All three models connect to the host computer's FireWire 400 bus. Duende comes in three models: the original single-rackspace unit, the Duende PCIe card and Duende Mini, the new 1/3-rackspace unit.
